Spring High Rat Terriers
"Home of Champions"

Susan Helen Cooney and Bruce Norman Strnad, married, of Spring High Rat Terriers in Lake City, Florida welcome you to our photo site.  This is a very comprehensive website of our hobbies and interests, which is a mixture of educational text and over a thousand photos and documentation.  Be sure to click on each album's title to open it up to view the contents.  We just celebrated our TENTH YEAR RAT TERRIER ANNIVERSARY, from 2000 to 2010. See our special anniversary album for a trip down memory lane with the fabulous dogs that appear in our pedigrees.

THE HISTORY OF THE RAT TERRIER
The Rat Terrier is an American breed descended from the terriers brought over by English miners and other working class immigrants.  These terriers probably included crosses between the Smooth Fox Terrier, the Manchester Terrier and the now extinct White English Terrier.  These dogs were used as ratters, and gambling on their prowess in killing rats was a favorite hobby of their owners.  Some of these dogs were crossed with Whippets or Italian Greyhounds (for speed) and Beagles (for hunting ability).  Eventually, these tough little terriers evolved into today's Rat Terrier.  The breed was popularized by President Teddy Roosevelt, who hunted with his Rat Terriers.  Many are still used as ratters and squirrel hunters, particularly in the South, where they are sometimes known as "feists."

THE DIVERSIFIED RAT TERRIER GENE POOL: RTs, AHTs & TRTs
The Rat Terrier (RT) and the Teddy Roosevelt Terrier (TRT) were recognized by the United Kennel Club on January 1, 1999 as two distinct terrier breeds, mostly distinguished by their different leg lengths.  But before that time, the two types were given letter designations by Universal Kennel Club International (UKCI) and the National Rat Terrier Association (NRTA): the longer-legged, square Rat Terriers were referred to as Type A/Class A Rat Terriers, and the shorter-legged, rectangular Rat Terriers were referred to as Type B/Class B Rat Terriers.  Type A and Type B Rat Terriers were often crossed, and all were registered together with UKCI as Rat Terriers.  The NRTA frowned on crossing the two.  The United Kennel Club (UKC), however, decided to seperate the two types completely, and the shorter-legged Rat Terriers  were re-named to Teddy Roosevelt Terriers (TRTs).  The Hairless Rat Terriers, either actually hairless or coated carriers of the hairless gene, were recognized by United Kennel Club on Jan. 1, 2004 and were renamed to American Hairless Terriers (AHTs) and taken out of the Rat Terrier gene pool.  But from 1999 to 2004, anyone registering a Rat Terrier with UKC had to designate it either as "C" for coated variety, or "H" for hairless variety.  So, now in the UKC show ring you will see RTs, AHTs and TRTs in the Terrier Group, and each has its own Breed Standard.

SIZING UP A RAT TERRIER: INCHES OR POUNDS?
Various registries have set different breed standards for rat terriers, and all of this leads to confusion when discussing sizes.  Quoting here from AKC: American Kennel Club, ARTA: American Rat Terrier Association,  NRTA: National Rat Terrier Association, UKC: United Kennel Club, UKCI: Universal Kennel Club International, RTCA: Rat Terrier Club of America
TOT - under 5 lbs (NRTA)
TOY - 10 lbs or less (UKCI)
TOY - 10 lbs or less and  height not to exceed 12 in. (NRTA)
TOY - Both AKC/RTCA and UKC/ARTA do not recognize nor include the toy variety in their breed standard.
MINIATURE - over 10 lbs up to 18 lbs, height not to exceed 15 in. (NRTA)
MINIATURE - at least 10 in., not to exceed 13 in. (AKC with its club RTCA)
MINIATURE - not exceeding 13 in. (UKC with its club ARTA)
MINIATURE - over 10 lbs to 18 lbs (UKCI)
STANDARD - over 13 in. and up to and including 18 in. (AKC with its club RTCA)
STANDARD - over 13 in. but not exceeding 18 in. (UKC with its club ARTA)

THE GENERAL APPEARANCE OF THE RAT TERRIER
The Rat Terrier is a muscular, active, small-to-medium hunting terrier.  The preferred ratio of length of body (posternum to point of buttocks) to height (withers to ground) is 10:9.  The head is broad, slightly domed, wedge-shaped and proportionate to the size of the body.  Ears are V-shaped, set at the outside edges of the skull, and may be erect, tipped or button when the dog is alert.  The Rat Terrier may have a natural tail carried in an upward curve, a natural bob tail, or a docked tail.  The Rat Terrier comes in solid white, other solid colors with markings, and white with a variety of colored patches.

THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE RAT TERRIER
Terriers as a group are characterized by feisty temperaments, weather-resistant coats, muscular bodies and strong, independent natures.  The Rat Terrier is an energetic, alert dog whose curiosity and intelligence make him easy to train.  The Rat Terrier has sometimes been described as having a dual personality.  He is a fearless, tenacious hunter with seemingly unlimited energy.  When he is not hunting, however, the Rat Terrier is an exceptionally friendly companion, getting along with children, other dogs, and even cats he knows.  Rat Terriers enjoy human companionship immensely and will enthusiastically share any activity with their owners.

Our personal goals as active members of the rat terrier community since 2000 are as follows:

1. To selectively breed pedigreed, registered, OFA-certified health tested and DNA-tested PLL Clear/Normal adult rat terriers that exhibit the BEST COMPANION TEMPERAMENT, along with CORRECT BREED TYPE AND CONFORMATION, to meet the breed standards as set forth by UKC (United Kennel Club) for Miniature Variety and Standard Variety rat terriers, and UKCI (Universal Kennel Club International) for Type A toy rat terriers.  Both AKC and UKC do not recognize or list toy rat terriers in their breed standard.

A NOTE ABOUT THE HEALTH TESTING WE DO: Health screening is one of the major tools that responsible breeders use to improve the genetic health of their dogs and puppies.  We believe in the Orthopedic Foundation For Animals's motto, "HEALTH-TESTED PARENTS FOR HEALTHIER PUPPIES."  See the OFA certified health testing we do on our dogs at: http://www.offa.org and type in the dog's full registered name.  We health test and certify our dogs for ... 1. congenital cardiac disease via veterinary inspection ... 2. patellar luxation (kneecaps) via veterinary inspection ... 3. hip dysplasia via x-rays ... 4. elbow dysplasia via x-rays ... 5. Legg-Calve Perthes Disease (LCP) via x-rays ... and now, as of October 2009, ... 6. Primary Lens Luxation (PLL) via DNA testing.  We began OFA certified health testing on our rat terriers for cardiac and patellas in June, 2003 and CHIC certifying our rat terriers in 2005 when rat terriers were added to the CHIC list of breeds. CHIC Website: www.caninehealthinfo.org

2. To raise happy, healthy QUALITY puppies for ourselves, thereby keeping our breeding program moving forward.

3. To carefully place pet quality and show/breeding potential puppies (as well as an occasional retiring adult dog) in their best forever homes, and to assist the new owners as much as possible and for as long as necessary.  References are available upon request.

4. To follow our puppies and dogs and their adventures with their new families over the years. Should circumstances ever change, please know that we will gladly take back any Spring High puppy or dog, at any time and for any reason, with no questions asked.  In addition, we enjoy puppy sitting or dog sitting for those Spring High rat terriers that live near-by.

There are MANY pet registries that register rat terriers.  Some have a better reputation than others.  Both AKC and UKC offer showring opportunities.  Our adult rat terriers are registered with:
-AKC (American Kennel Club, Miscellaneous Group as of July 01, 2010) and/or
-UKC (United Kennel Club) and/or
-UKCI (Universal Kennel Club, International)

We strive to breed like variety/size sires to like variety/size dams.  However, because of the diversity in the rat terrier gene pool, it is probable that smaller-sized puppies may be thrown from larger-sized parents.

We look forward to hearing from you, and we enjoy introducing everyone we meet to this wonderful, versatile breed.

Thank you for your interest.

1. SPRING HIGH DENT'S CHLOE - spayed adult female, 4 years old, black & white, 15 lbs

Chloe originally wasn't a Spring High puppy.  She was a FL house pet that came to us in 2010 when her family was having difficult times.  They didn't want to place her in a shelter or pound, so they contacted us and asked us, would we take her in.
Chloe had not been spayed, and was a purebred rat terrier and was registered with UKCI.  She went through our program of health testing and passed all tests with flying colors.  She whelped her first litter of six gorgeous puppies with Boo in 2011.  Unfortunately, she experienced a difficult delivery and required an emergency C-section.  The decision was made to have her spayed at the time of her C-section, thereby ending her breeding time with us.
Chloe was returned to her original family in 2011, along with one of her puppies.  They once again are now going through more difficulties in 2012, so Chloe and her daughter, Annie, are coming back to us, which is our policy with placing puppies and dogs - we will always take back a Spring High puppy or dog, with no questions asked, at any time.  Annie will be evaluated for inclusion in our breeding program and will more than likely join her sister, Simone, and her brother, Andre, who remained here under breeder hold.
CHLOE HAS HAD FULL HEALTH TESTING (cardiac normal, patellas normal, LCP normal, elbows normal, hips rated good) CHIC #70704 AND IS  PLL CLEAR/NORMAL.

Call Sue at (386) 754-0835  or send me an email, shcooney@bellsouth.net to discuss Chloe, thank you.

WE DO CERTIFIED HEALTH TESTING
5. WE DO CERTIFIED HEALTH TESTING  (Updated December 25, 2011)
*Click on the title, above, or the thumbnail photo, left, to open this album.*

Every breed of dog has health issues, and rat terriers are no exception.  In 2005, the Canine Health Information Center (CHIC, see www.offa.org website) and the American Rat Terrier Association (ARTA, see www.imageevent.com/arta website) worked together to develop a list of major health concerns found to be prevalent in rat terriers.  Rat terriers that have been tested in all required areas (regardless of the test results), and whose owners agree to make all the test results public, are assigned a CHIC certificate number.  Health tests required for CHIC certification for rat terriers are: congenital cardiac via veterinary exam ... hip dysplasia via x-rays ...patellar luxation via veterinary exam ... and Legg-Calve-Perthes disease (LCP) via x-rays.  Optional health tests for rat terriers are: eye clearance via CERF testing ... congenital deafness via BAER testing ... and elbow dysplasia via x-rays.

On October 15, 2009 the University of Missouri developed a genetic DNA test for Primary Lens Luxation (PLL) for all breeds of dogs.  PLL is a very serious and painful genetic condition affecting the lens of the eye that can lead to blindness.  This very new and important DNA test can be ordered online from the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA, www.offa.org is the website).  The kit comes in the mail.    You take a cheek scraping at home with a swab, you dab the swab on a test card and you mail it back to OFA.  It's just that easy and simple to test for PLL.  The test kit costs $65 and doesn't require a vet visit.  This is a one-time test,  and even young puppies can be tested for PLL.

THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR BREEDERS NOT DNA TESTING THEIR BREEDING  DOGS FOR PLL - OR WORSE YET, STILL PRODUCING LITTERS OF PUPPIES, YET CLAIMING THEY DON'T HAVE THE MONEY TO PAY FOR PLL TESTING, OR ANY OTHER HEALTH TESTING, FOR THAT MATTER.  THIS HORRIBLE GENETIC DISEASE CAN BE IDENTIFIED IN A FEW DAYS AND REMOVED FROM ANY BREEDING PROGRAM IN ONE GENERATION.

When you get your certified PLL test results back, you will know if your dog is #1/CLEAR of PLL, #2/a CARRIER AT LOW RISK (2% to 10%) of PLL or is #3/AFFECTED AT HIGH RISK of PLL.

~#1 CLEAR of PLL means, your dog will never get PLL and can never produce a dog with PLL if bred to another CLEAR mate.  ***The Ideal Breeding Pair: Breeding #1/CLEAR TO #1/CLEAR = 100% CLEAR offspring.

~#2/CARRIER/LOW RISK for PLL means, your dog is at low risk (2%-10%) for getting PLL and can pass it on to its offspring if bred carelessly to another PLL carrier, or if bred to a PLL affected dog.
***Breeding Is Safe: Breeding #2/CARRIER TO #1/CLEAR = 50% CARRIER and 50% CLEAR
All pups in this litter must be DNA-tested for PLL to determine each pup's PLL status as either #1/CLEAR or #2/CARRIER, which is especially important if a pup from this cross is to be used for breeding.  No pups in this litter will be #3/AFFECTED by PLL.
***High Risk Breeding: Breeding #2/CARRIER TO #2/CARRIER = 25% CLEAR, 50% CARRIER, 25% AFFECTED
***High Risk Breeding: Breeding #2/CARRIER to #3/AFFECTED = 50% CARRIER and 50% AFFECTED
REMEMBER, A CARRIER IS AT 2%-20% RISK OF DEVELOPING PLL ITSELF.

~#3 AFFECTED/HIGH RISK for PLL means, your dog will probably get PLL and will probably pass it on to its offspring if bred carelessly to a PLL carrier or to another PLL affected dog.
***High Risk Breeding: Breeding #3/AFFECTED TO #1/CLEAR = 100% CARRIER
***High Risk Breeding: Breeding #3/AFFECTED TO #2/CARRIER = 50% AFFECTED and 50% CARRIER
***Breeding Not Recommended: Breeding #3/AFFECTED TO #3/AFFECTED = 100% AFFECTED

Another designation for PLL testing is "CLEAR BY PARENTAGE," which means that if the dog's parents have been tested for PLL, and both are certified CLEAR, and if sire, dam and offspring are DNA verified, then all offspring will be certified CLEAR as well.  PLEASE NOTE: OFA will only certify Clear By Parentage offspring for one generation out, due to human mistakes in the lab and new spontaneous mutations, as explained to me by Dr. Keller.

Read about PLL at the University of Missouri website:  http://www.caninegeneticdiseases.net/GLX/mainGLX.htm

If you want to test your dog for PLL, rat terrier or any breed, this is what you do.  Go online to the OFA website, which is www.offa.org, and look under Disease Information.  Go to OFA/MU DNA TEST to PLL.

LET ME REPEAT - THERE IS NO GOOD EXCUSE FOR NOT TESTING BREEDING STOCK FOR THIS TERRIBLE GENETIC DISEASE.  PLL CAN BE ELIMINATED IN ONE GENERATION!

Read about disease information and CHIC certification at: www.offa.org

Here at Spring High, we do OFA health testing and CHIC certifying for:
  1. Primary Lens Luxation (PLL) via DNA testing.  This is a one-time test.
PLEASE NOTE: As of November 04, 2010, we have completed all of our PLL testing on a total of 12 dogs and puppies.  We are very happy and relieved to report - NO SPRING HIGH DOGS OR PUPPIES TESTED AFFECTED WITH PLL.  Other breeders are testing and purposely choosing to breed CARRIERS or AFFECTED dogs.  In many cases, the breeder will not pay to test all puppies in a litter and may only do PLL testing on their best "pick of the litter" puppies. That leaves the "pet" puppy buyer unsure of their puppy's PLL status, and so they are left to foot the bill to test their puppy.  We are moving ahead with our breeding program, and choose to breed ONLY PLL CLEAR DOGS, thereby producing ONLY PLL CLEAR PUPPIES.
  2. cardiac and patellas via veterinary exam at 1 year old, repeated as the dog ages
  3. hips and LCP (Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease) via x-rays at 2 years old.  These are one-time tests.

SO NOW YOU KNOW!!!  BEFORE YOU CONSIDER PURCHASING A PUPPY OR AN ADULT DOG FROM ANYWHERE OR FROM ANYONE, ASK ABOUT THE HEALTH TESTING THAT BREEDER HAS DONE ON HIS/HER LINES. YES! - health testing costs money.   YES! - health testing takes time.  YES! - sadly, health testing results may force an early retirement of a young dog or puppy from participating in a breeding program and/or a promising show career.
MAKE HEALTH TESTING A PRIORITY WHEN SHOPPING FOR YOUR RAT TERRIER.  AND BE SURE TO ASK ABOUT PLL - BECAUSE NOW YOU KNOW!!!
