Wild Oak Rat Terriers (March 21, 2005)

Now in southern California!!
* * Welcome to Wild Oak Rat Terriers, we're glad you stopped by and hope you enjoy our albums. We are a small breeder of Rat Terriers, located in Campo, California, that's East San Diego County in the high desert. We live on 93 acres, a fantastic place to raise dogs, with plenty of room to run, hunt and explore.
At Wild Oak we specialize in large mini's to small standards, emphasis on temperament, health, quality, conformation, structural correctness, beauty, brains and prey drive.
Our puppies are raised in the house, with cats, chickens and lots of socialization and love. When the pups are old enough to venture outside, we go for walks on the ranch with their Mom and they learn about lots of fun stuff!!
They are very well adjusted, outgoing, happy and have strong self esteems.
We enjoy participating with our dogs in performance events and conformation competition. A Rat Terrier’s main love in life is to be with their people, so they enjoy competing as well, pets first, show dogs second. Rat Terriers are a hardy healthy breed, strong, active, happy and funny. They are the ultimate family companion, happy to lay around all day, ready to go in an instant. They are very sensitive and easy to train, enjoy participating with their people, and are happiest when they’re with them.
Their tails are docked, dew claws removed, de-worming starts at 2 weeks of age, they are given their first immunization at 8 weeks. They are microchipped, and go to their forever homes with a Veterinarian exam, health guarantee and pedigree.
Our dogs are UKC and AKC registered.
We've made it!! Effective July 1, 2010, Rat Terriers advanced in AKC from FSS to the Miscellaneous Group!! What does this mean to us? It means we can finally show in conformation at a AKC show!! So, it's just a matter of time until we're fully recognized in the Terrier Group!!
A million thanks to the people who have so diligently worked on this project, especially Pam Mills, it's her perserverance that has made it happen.

CH Wild Oak's Anson St. Church (December 2, 2011)
We're in southern California now!!
WOO-HOO!! Church won his UKC Championship in November, competing one weekend, he's such a great boy!!
Silver Bay Kennel Club AKC show in Del Mar, CA, Church went Best of Breed both days!! Way to go boy!! We're very proud of him.
Sire: CH Turn Rugostar at Wild Oak Dam: CH Bogart Porche Perfecta Wild Oak, CD, RN, CGC Born: May 5, 2011 Black Bi
Yep, here he is, "The Church," I don't know when I've been so smitten with a puppy, but this guy is unbelievable and owns my heart.
He's started his UKC show career and is doing very well, he'll make his AKC debut early next year. We have high hopes for this gorgeous boy, I think he's going to be a major force to be reckoned with.
Check back often to watch Churchill mature and face all his new adventures.

Wild Oak's Mint Julep (November 28, 2011)
Dam: CH Bogart Porche Perfecta WildOak, CD, RN, CGC Sire: CH Turn Turbo Rugostar at Wild Oak Born: May 5, 2011 Black-bi
Meet Julep, she's the most recent addition to Wild Oak Rat Terriers. She's a funny girl, extremely opinionated, bossy, very loving and affectionate. She's from "The Kentucky Derby" litter and since she's the last female puppy from our beloved "Queen Mother" Porsche, we had to keep her here with us.
She'll be making her show ring debut in 2012, she's got some growing to do. In the meantime she's runnin' with the pack on 93 acres, growing up mentally and physically.
Please check back often to see her as she matures.

This is Our New Home (September 30, 2011)
This is our new home, 93 acres in the high desert area of East San Diego County, Campo, California. There's a lot of work to be done on this property, mostly cleaning up the junk that was dumped here by the previous owner. Lt. John W. Finn, from 1958 to 2010. I use the term "junk" loosely as this would include some relics and antiques. A lot of history goes along with this property, it's going to be fun and a challenge to make it our home.
David will also be helping remodel the two story home, that's right up his alley, he loves doing that kind of work.
We were the Beverly Hillbillies making the final trip to Campo, with chickens, dogs, cats, fish and plants. I actually have a rocking chair to put in the bed of our truck but decided to ride inside in air conditioning, otherwise I could have rocked my way to our new home!

Sire: GRCH Sand's Of Time at Wild Oak "Trooper" Dam: Wild Oak's Kiss Me Quick "Chevelle"
Wild Oak's first desert litter has arrived, starting at 3:45 am Monday, July 25, four incredible puppies were born.
This is Chevelle's first litter, I would have preferred for her to wait but sneaky Trooper seems to always find a way. When I say she squirted puppies out one after the other she certainly did. It was a cake walk for her and she's being a wonderful mother.
First born - blue tri male, 3:45 am - "Coyote" SOLD to Brittany and Joel, Torrance, CA Second born - black tri female, 4:50 am - "Roadrunner" SOLD Third born - black tri female, 5:40 am "Sagebrush" - SOLD Fourth born - black tri female,5:45 am - "Desert Flower" Available
These puppies are extremely vigorous, active and hardy. Super wigglers for sure, yet stoic and brave during tail docking and dewclaw removal.
We couldn't be happier with this beautiful vigorous litter, please check back to see them mature.

This is Porsche "what a dog" Littleton, she's our baby and our constant companion. During the day she gardens with her Mom (varmints beware) and is the CEO of the Rat Terrier Security Company. She enjoys exploring and hunting with her dog family, Gabby, Trooper, Libby and Chevelle, aka the "Terrier Terrorists." She loves to go shopping at Home Depot, Orchard Supply and especially to pet stores.
At night she is happy hanging out with her Mom, Dad and doggie family, sharing a bite of their dinner, watching a little TV and burrowing under the covers at bed time.
Porsche earned her AKC Rally Novice degree July 2010, it was lots of fun to compete with her in that event, now we're moving on to the next level in the Rally competition. She also earned her AKC CGC title, "Canine Good Citizen," and she certainly is just that.
Porsche's parents are T-Bone and Spring, thank you so much Deborah Bogart for this most awesome girl. She certainly started us on the right foot in Rat Terrier land.
Rat Terriers were accepted into the AKC FSS program, mid 2005. On January 1, 2006 they were approved to compete in the AKC performance events, such as, obedience, rally, tracking, and agility.
January 28, 2006 Porsche debut Rat Terriers at the prestigious Golden Gate Kennel Club show at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. She was brilliant, got a first leg towards her CD degree and placed 4th too!! Two more legs were earned on February 26, thus earning her CD degree!! and are we ever proud of her!!
Porsche was in training for agility and loved it, we probably won't be competing in this event as she's getting a little older for the jumping. We still play at home on our own agility obstacles, she has a blast.

I've really enjoyed searching for and finding Vintage/Antique pictures of Rat Terriers. Some of the dogs in these pics are surely Fox Terriers or Jack Russell Terriers, but close enough. Hope you enjoy and if you run across any artwork that's Rat Terrier/Terrier specific, I'd love to see it.

***
Here are the dogs that we have bred and/or own that have become Champions and/or Grand Champions.
It's with great pride that we share them with you. They truly are wonderful, great family companions, our babies, our best friends, our partners.
Many of the dogs we've raised are show quality and could win their championships easily. However, not all puppy homes are interested in showing, so those little "show dogs" are living up to their forever family's expections, and are "winning" hearts and love every day.

Miscellaneous Items of Interest (August 20, 2007)
Everybody knows you should get your puppy from "a good breeder." But how can you tell who's a good breeder? Raising good puppies makes some very specific demands, so there are signs, we'll call them traffic lights, that the careful buyer can spot.
Click here to learn "How to Recognize a Good Breeder"
There's so much to know about taking care of a puppy; there's also much to understand about training a puppy. How do you begin? You begin by first learning about what makes a puppy a puppy - what he needs, what he responds to, what he can do. This link then is your introduction to basic puppy.

The great dog food debate- the good the bad and the ugly. How does one choose? If you follow television, you may believe that the companies that advertise there have foods full of tasty meat and chock full of great vitamins and minerals, but is it true? Not so much. In the world of dog food it is buyer beware, yet the average person picking up a supermarket brand of dog food is unaware of the hazard. This does not make them bad owners – they are simply uninformed owners. Who knew you needed to research dog food more diligently than your own food?
Click here to read a great article about how to select your dog food
Over the years many pet owners and Veterinarians have become concerned about the potentially harmful practice of annual vaccination. As immune disease, cancer and chronic disease in canines increases, new studies on the duration of immunity are being done.
All 27 veterinary schools in North America are in the process of changing their protocols for vaccinating dogs and cats. Those that are working for change have a long road ahead of them.
Old habits die hard; fortunately things are starting to change for the better thanks to a few dedicated Veterinarians and researchers who are willing to make a difference.

The Rainbow Bridge (June 15, 2007) * Dedicated to our loved ones who are waiting for us there, we miss you very much and think of you everyday.
Just this side of heaven is a place called the Rainbow Bridge......
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
