IRISHGLYN RAT TERRIERS ***********************************************
PHOTO ALBUMS LISTED BELOW

Hi Folks, we own Rat Terriers (or they own us :) and we're located in NW Oregon. We've had a lot of personal enjoyment having these wonderful dogs in our lives, and hope to enjoy many more years with our dogs.
Both Russ and I grew up with dogs, and our children have too. My family had a few rescue dogs during the years, and one was named Pepper who was small, spunky, and looked like a rat terrier. We didn't know Pepper's background, but comparing him to our rat terriers today, his character and looks were the same in almost every way. We became involved with rat terriers again 1999, brought our beautiful rat terrier Annie into our home in 2001, and Miguel in 2002. We were amazed at how smart these little dogs were, easily trained, loved children, and didn't know a stranger. They were both typical terriers, prey-driven, loved to hunt small critters on our property, great watch dogs, and wonderful lap dogs at night. We started attending UKC conformation shows, started breeding and showing our dogs, and learned more then we ever dreamed about this breed :) After a few years of evaluating our litters for temperament and structure, we decided we wanted to reproduce the excellent temperaments that Annie and Miguel had, and improve upon type and structure. First and foremost, our dogs are a part of our family, and we want them to fit into our puppy owner's families as well. Just as our logo says, we're dedicated to improving our lines and the breed itself, and we've seen our hard work pay off in the last few years.
Before they are bred, our adult rat terriers are examined by our vet, and then certified for cardiac and patella with the Orthopedic Foundation For Animals (OFA). Some of our adults have their hips/elbows ex-rayed.
Here is a short version of the history of the Rat Terrier, taken from the UKC Rat Terrier Standard:
"The Rat Terrier is an American breed descended from the terriers brought over by English miners and other working class immigrants. These terriers probably included crosses between the Smooth Fox Terrier, the Manchester Terrier and the now extinct white English Terrier. These dogs were used as ratters, and gambling on their prowess in killing rats was a favorite hobby of their owners. Some of these dogs were crossed with Whippets or Italian Greyhounds (for speed) and Beagles (for hunting ability). Eventually, these tough little terriers evolved into today's Rat Terrier"
We've found that this is a breed that has fit wonderfully into our family, and we can't imagine life without them. We like to mix a little of our Irish/Scottish heritage into most of the things we do, and we have a wee bit 'O fun doing it..if you have any questions about our kennel, just send us an email at IrishGlyn@Gmail.com, or give us a call at 503-357-3583.
