CAL VAL RAT TERRIERS
                                    CAL VAL RAT TERRIERS
My Grandparents, parents, and now my adult children are dedicated to RAT TERRIERS. We have been loving and raising RAT TERRIERS since the early 1900's.

They were not always known as RAT TERRIERS. They were called "Toy Fox Terriers" back in the early 1900's. They were the "farm dog" of the 40's and 50's keeping the rodent population under control in the important barn full of grain and hay.  Due to their charming personalities they became the cherished family pet and chief playmate to the children.

My husband John (of 45 years) and I are both retired and live 40 minutes from Yosemite National Park in California among the tall pine trees of the beautiful Sierra/Nevada Mountains. It's absolutely lovely up here at 3,000 ft elevation.  Our 5 adult children and their spouses, our 20 Grandchildren and 1 great grandchildren and our 9 adult Rat Terriers are our passion. Deer and tree squirrels in our yard are frequent guests.  Wild Turkey, Birds of Prey and other critters make thier presence known. We love it.

Our dogs are not confined to kennels. They play in a large fenced back yard or on our large front deck. At night they sleep indoors in crates for their warmth and safety. We are always aware of coyotes.

New mothers and their young puppies are kept in our living room next to our recliners. They are handled daily. At 3 weeks the puppies are introduced to the pine pellet litter box. By the time they are around 8 weeks old and leaving with their new families they are very skilled in litter box protocol! It makes house training SO MUCH EASIER.

By being right in the center of our living room our young puppies get used to all the action and noises of a busy home. They also are held a lot by us and by visitors of all ages.  This makes for very well socialized puppies.

At 4 weeks old our puppies are introduced to our front deck for supervised play. Their mothers, aunts, grandmothers and greatgrandmother enjoy teaching the puppies proper puppy protcol. This is an important time in their development and it's great fun to watch them from our large front window!!

We have been showing our dogs in UKC conformation shows for 11 years ... for a variety of reasons. We have learned so much about what makes a healthy, structurally correct Rat Terrier.  It has helped us make better breeding choices.  By competing and earning their Champion and Grand Champion titles our dogs are evaluated and validated by professional judges.  We want to produce the best quality Rat Terriers possible and we feel if our dogs are not good enough to earn their Champion or Grand Champion titles... they probably shouldn't be bred. We breed only healthy dogs with a careful eye on their pedigrees. Showing dogs is also good exercise!!

I'm a retired Registered Nurse with an OB background, so I am very focused on health and safety and keeping good records. Vaccinations and worming meds are given at the appropriate time and I personally  microchip all our puppies. I remove dew claws and tie tails 3 days after birth.

We encourage spay and neuter for all dogs not destined for the show ring or breeding. Most of our "show quality" puppies go to pet homes and are spayed/neutered and that is just fine with us. Our primary goal is to provide excellent Rat Terriers to loving dedicated families. If they are shown in the ring...that's just a bonus.

All our adult dogs are PLL TESTED and CLEAR or CLEAR BY PARENTAGE. (Ask me about PLL, a very serious eye disease found in several Terrier breeds) By being "CLEAR" our dogs and puppies can not get PLL nor can they pass it down to offspring.  PLL (Primary Lens Luxation) is  important for you to learn about if you are looking for Rat Terriers. We also OFA certify our dogs on Cardiac and Patellas.

Our puppies are:
*Microchipped and UTD on vaccines and worming
*Sold with Health Warrantee
*Out of Champion and Grand Champion bloodlines
*Out of only PLL CLEAR parents
*Litter box trained starting at 3 weeks old
*Raised in our living room with lots of love
*Shipping available
*WE also have a lifetime return policy if you are ever unable to care for your puppy/dog.

I (Gail) worked as a volunteer member of the Board of Directors for ARTA (American Rat Terrier Assoc) for several years. I chaired several projects and committees.  I also designed the ARTA logo, which is still being used. We worked side by side with the United Kennel Club Vice President.  This was an invaluable time in my personal growth and learning about all things, RAT TERRIER.

We invite you to ask questions, request additional photos and visit our home anytime. We are proud of how we raise our dogs and visitors are always welcome. All our dogs are registered with the county and we have a good working relationship with the local SPCA and Animal Control and help rehome Rat Terriers whenever we can. All of our dogs are registered with the county.

We frequently refer to other breeders who also health test and use only PLL CLEAR parents.  We are not in competition with anyone. Nor, do we argue with those who may feel differently than we do. We won't particpate in slander.

All photographs are taken by me and copyright protected. All rights reserved.

I LOVE to photograph our puppies and keep their puppy websites updated with new photos. If you want extra photos of any puppy ... just ask!  We encourage you to share any of our albums with others but do not take individual photos from those pages with out my persmission and please do not cross post our photos or albums without our permission.

HAPPY RATTING!
Gail and Hubby John

PICABO is in her NEW HOME
5. PICABO is in her NEW HOME
THE STORY OF PICABO (UPDATE 2/9/13)

PICABO is now in her new home.  Jim and Mary have 11, 12, and 13 yr old Rat Terrier females that they purchased from us years ago.  PICABO is the new "BABY" of the Family. We are thrilled!

PICABO was a scrawny, tiny, ugly  2 3/4 oz puppy when she was born. I was sure she wouldn't survive. Yes, she WAS ugly. I tube fed her a few times that and kept her warm but didn't expect her to live through the night. She had other plans.  I tube fed her a few more times the next day and saw her latch on a few times. She was always very squirmy when I picked her up. After a few days we realized her mother was setting her aside and nursing her alone.  Rat Terriers are SO SMART!

PICABO has no future in the show ring!! You might say she was an embarrassment out of two Grand Champion parents. Her littermates were 3 times her size. (See photos)  It was a great stroke of luck that her GRANDDAM GRCH HALO had lost a singleton puppy at birth and was eager to mother a puppy. At 4 weeks old PICABO's other littermates were starting to wean and PICABO needed to keep nursing. So, we handed her over to HALO and it was first site! HALO mothered her "only puppy" and nursed her until she was 3 1/2 months old. HALO licked and caressed her nonstop. PICABO thrived on all the attention.

PICABO was examined by our vet at age 3 months old and declared HEALTHY despite her size. GOod heart, good lungs, and her patellas are nice and tight. Her overbite and narrow muzzle does not effect her eating.  We know she looks more like a Chihuahua than a Rat Terrier but she is full blooded RAT TERRIER. She has the cutest personality. Full of Fun and Vinegar and yet still very affectionate.

She also has the cutest SMIRK!!

We moved to the mountains in APRIL of 2008. We are surrounded by tall pine trees and clean fresh air. We are at 3,000 ft elevation so we do get some snow each winter...just enough to be decorative but not a hardship.

WE LOVE IT HERE... who wouldn't?

Each year we add improvements to the home and yard is a work in progress. I'll try to get updtaed photos with each new change

Our Beautiful HOOLA is out of our own

Dam: GRAND CHAMPION CAL VAL LEGGO MY HALO
Sire: CATCH ME'S MONTEREY SEQUOIA owned by Dawn Jantzen Table Mtn Rat Terriers

HOOLA scurried right up to her Grand Championship in just a few dog shows. In fact she took her last win towards her Grand Title with "hooters" down to her knees (almost)  She had finished nursing her puppies but still has significant mammary swing!  IT was sooo funny ... as she proudly took the WIN.

We will be breeding HOOLA in the Fall ... still haven't decide on the male yet.  He must be magnificent! Any ideas?

ALBUM UPDATED 1/28/09

Image hosted by Photobucket.com  Image hosted by Photobucket.com  Image hosted by Photobucket.com

SINCE THE EARLY 1900'S MY FAMILY HAS BEEN LOVING AND RAISING RAT TERRIERS. HERE YOU CAN SEE THE PHOTOS OF MY GRANDPARENTS, MY MOTHER, MY UNCLE AND THE RAT TERRIERS THEY RAISED WHO WERE SO MUCH A PART OF THE FAMILY.  THEY CALLED THEM "TOY FOX TERRIERS" BUT YOU CAN SEE THEY ARE NOT THE SMALL TFT OF TODAY.  THEY WERE LATER CALLED RAT TERRIERS BY PRESEIDENT TEDDY ROOSEVELT AND THAT BECAME THEIR OFFICIL NAME SHORTLY THEREAFTER.

THEY ARE REMARKABLY SMART, LOYAL, FUN AND VERSATILE DOGS WHO WILL WAG THEIR WAY INTO YOUR HEART AND BE YOUR BEST FRIEND FOR LIFE.

WE SHOW AND CHAMPION AND GRAND CHAMPION OUR DOGS TO VALIDATE THEIR QUALITY BUT MOST OF OUR PUPS GO TO FAMILIES WHO JUST WANT A WONDERFUL PET, WHICH IS FINE WITH US.

IF YOU ARE GOING TO BUY A PUREBRED REGISTERED DOG, WHY NOT BUY QUALITY?

UKC GR CH CHAOS
11. UKC GR CH CHAOS    (August 21, 2003)
Image hosted by Photobucket.com
CHOAS came to us a as a fat puppy from Patty Cromer of Maxwells Rats in Alabama many years ago and our life has never been the same.
This sweet suhthun boy won my heart and knocked our sox off in the show ring. He taught me how to show dogs as he was a natural and I was a Newbie.
Not only did I acquire my canine heart throb, I also acquired a great friend in Patty.
CHAOS's parents are:
MAXWELL'S FULL OF TROUBLE
and MAXWELL'S MISSY
He is a UKC Grand Champion and one of his daughter's was the 2002 #1 TOP TEN Rat Terrier in the Nation in show points.
CHAOS has several Champion and Grand Champion offspring and grandoffspring now. Many are still in the Top Ten. He was the featured dog on the 2003 front cover of the Brown Trout Calendars for Rat Terriers and in the year 2004 he is the featured dog for the month of MAY.

SAD UPDATE:  CHAOS was injured in September of 2005 and barely survived.  He was left paralized. I spent the next 3 1/2 months trying to rehabilitate him enough that he could stand and walk again. That required expressing his bladder several times a day and sewing outfits for him to protect his legs from sores as he scooted across the house. We made some progress but he was never able to walk or stand. He was relatively happy but he really missed being outside and KING of the yard.

It was an emotional time for me and for my family.  The Grandchildren were especially affected by this as he was dearly loved by all of them.  On December 10th, after much prayer and many family discussions, I let CHAOS go to his Heavenly Father. That was over 2 months ago and I'm just starting to be able to talk about it. My heart aches for my friend and I hope the pain will lessen soon.

I appreciate the fact that many of you reading this will be sad at this news ... but I ask that you not try to engage me in a conversation about it just yet.

I tried to make a dedication web site for CHAOS but I have been unable to finish it. My feelings are still raw. I will do that as soon as I am able.  I appreciate your understanding and your condolences.

Sincerely, Gail

UKC CH CAL VAL FINE BLUE CHINA
12. UKC CH CAL VAL FINE BLUE CHINA  (August 21, 2003)
UKC CHAMPION CAL VAL FINE BLUE CHINA (RETIRED)
is a full litter sister our CH CHEWSY. She is also a full sister (another litter) to GR CH CHAOS.

China is much smaller than both of them and built like their 9 lb petite mother... Maxwell's Missy.

CHINA'S PARENTS ARE:
MAXWELL'S FULL OF TROUBLE
MAXWELL'S MISSY
BOTH OWNED AND LOVED BY PATTY CROMER OF MAXWELLS KENNELS IN ALABLAMA.

CHINA hated the show ring at first and then she got the idea and pranced her way to her Championship.

ALBUM UPDATED 1/28/09
Every once in a while you keep a puppy who has the appearance of a total sweetheart. Then, they turn into a rip-snortin' package of trouble, wrapped up in a cute package.

Such is the case with Miss CAL VAL GIRDY ROTTEN SCOUNDREL and this is how she got her name.

GIRDY IS AN ADULT NOW AND A DELIGHTFUL PET TO A WONDERFUL FAMILY. I'VE NEVER HAD A PUPPY QUITE LIKE HER.

WALK IN THE WOODS
15. WALK IN THE WOODS
Grandchildren, Samantha and Dylan and I had
a great walk in the woods this week.  We wore
our matching hats to see each other clearly and
for others to see us.  We explored the nearby
streams, the different types of trees and flowers
and we brought home some acorns for their
mother, Dusty.  We talked about all things nature
and we enjoyed the beautiful blessings of this land
and gave gratitude that Heavenly Father has made so
many things for us to see and explore.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching them explore both alone
and together.  It warmed my heart to watch them help
each other as they climbed and explored. Each taking
time to make sure the other was safe and in sight.

Grandparenting is most enjoyable!!

AUTUMN HAS A NEW LOVING FAMILY!!!
19. AUTUMN HAS A NEW LOVING FAMILY!!!
UPDATE: 10/5/12
AUTUMN IS IN HER NEW HOME ... with a new buddy named DINO to play with.  She is wagging her tail... using a doggie door... and building her confidence. She also sleeps in bed with her new MOM and DAD and DINO!  We are so thrilled for "OUR AUTUMN"

The circumstances of this particular family adopting AUTUMN was much more than coincidence.  We all felt there was Heavenly Intervention and tears flowed freely when we saw DINO and AUTUMN meet for the first time.  Her sniffed her and she was relaxed. She sniffed him and looked up and smiled at us!!

READ Her story below and you'll see why we have taken her in to help her find her new family.

We found her birthdate .. and she is only 4 years old despite some greying in her face. She is SWEET, SPAYED, FULLY HOUSEBROKEN, LEAD TRAINED, MICROCHIPPED, UTD ON VACCINATIONS and RABIES.

AUTUMN'S HISTORY:
We know that AUTUMN was raised in a loving home in Le Grand Ca with other dogs and kids. We have her shot record and her name was AUTUMN. SHE recognizes her name. Her family fell into some very harsh times and the 3 Rat Terriers had to be rehomed immediately.  They found a person in the foothills to take them but it was not a good situation. Things went terribly wrong. A frightened AUTUMN ran away and fled into the forest, surviving by her own wits for 5 weeks.  Our forest has coyotes and mountain lions so we feared for her safety. We kept spotting her but could not catch her. She was finally trapped 9/15/12 by Animal Control.  Finally safe in custody.

AUTUMN is with my husband and I and we are taking photos of her every few days to show her progress.  We have had her just 5 days and the changes are remarkable.  SEE PHOTOS BELOW.

AUTUMN is not agressive nor snippy. She gets along well with my other dogs ... is calm around my grandchildren but loud voices or rapid movement still startle her. We think she would do best in a home with mature adults or older calm children who have the time to lavish her with the calm attention she needs.

She is responding so well to both my husband and I in  a short time. She even curled up on our neighbors lap when he came over to visit.  Kelly is a calm loving person and she responded to that.

We offer a 1 month return policy if the match is not ideal.  Please help us find the right home for this loving sweet little lady.

She has the most beautiful eyes!!

REHOMING FEE  NADA ... NUTHIN ... but LOVE her and take care of her! A REFERECNE LETTER FROM HEAVENLY FATHER WOULD BE HELPFUL  ; )
