CAL VAL RAT TERRIERS
                                    CAL VAL RAT TERRIERS
CAL VAL RAT TERRIERS - LOCATED IN CENTRAL CALIFORNIA FOR THE PAST 25 YEARS.
My Grandparents, parents, and now my adult children are dedicated to RAT TERRIERS. We go back to the early 1900's loving and raising RAT TERRIERS.

They were not always known as RAT TERRIERS. They were called "Toy Fox Terriers" back in the early 1900's. They were the "farm dog" of the 40's and 50's keeping the rodent population under control in the important barn full of grain and hay.  Due to their charming personalities they became the cherished family pet and chief playmate to the children.

My husband John (of 50 years) and I are retired and live at 3,000 ft elevation in the Sierra Nevada Mountains ... 40 minutes from Yosemite National Park. We love it. Our 5 adult children, their spouses, our 25 Grandchildren (including 2 GREAT grandchildren)and our 9 adult Rat Terriers are our passion. Deer, tree squirrels and wild turkey are frequent guests in our yard. Birds of Prey, coyotes and raccoons make their presence known. Our yard is designed for dog safety.  We tend to OVERPLANT our yard with flowers and trees, vines and ferns.

During the day our dogs play in a large fenced back yard or on our large front fenced deck. At night they sleep in crates indoors for their warmth and safety. Fans in the summer. Heaters in the winter.

New mothers and puppies are kept in our living room next to our recliners where they are handled daily. At 3 weeks puppies are introduced to the pine pellet litter box. By 8 weeks old and leaving with their new families they are very skilled in litter box protocol! It makes house training SO MUCH EASIER.

Puppies raised in a living room near the TV  get used to all the action and noises of a busy home. Visitors, young and old, hold and play with our puppies and as a result they are well socialized.

At 4 weeks old puppies are introduced to the front deck for supervised play. Their mothers, aunts, grandmothers and one great grandmother teach the puppies proper puppy protocol. This is an important time in their development. We love watching them from our large front window!!

We have been showing our dogs in UKC conformation shows for 17 years, and are now showing in AKC. Dog showing taught us what makes up a make a healthy, structurally correct Rat Terrier.  That has helped us make better breeding choices.  By competing and earning their Champion and Grand Champion titles our dogs are evaluated and validated by professional judges.  We want to produce the best quality Rat Terriers possible. We feel if our dogs are not good enough to earn their Champion or Grand Champion titles they probably shouldn't be bred. We breed only healthy dogs with a careful eye on their pedigrees. Showing dogs is also good exercise!!

I'm a retired Registered Nurse with an OB background, and Internationally Certified Lactation Consultant. I am very focused on health and safety and keeping good records. It's amazing how much of my OB training has helped me in assisting mothers having puppies. I give vaccinations and worming meds on schedule and I microchip all our puppies. I dock tails and remove dew claws 3 days after birth. I have a close working relationship with the vets in our area.

We encourage spay/neuter for all dogs not destined for the show ring or breeding. Most of our "show quality" puppies go to pet homes and are spayed/neutered. That is just fine with us since our primary goal is to provide excellent Rat Terriers to loving dedicated families. If they are shown in the ring that's just a bonus.

All our adult dogs are DNA tested for PLL and for PRA-PRCD. Two eye diseases. ALL are Clear and puppies are CLEAR BY PARENTAGE. Ask me about PLL (Primary Lens Luxation) a serious eye disease found in several Terrier breeds. By being "CLEAR" our dogs and puppies cannot get PLL nor can they pass it down to offspring. We only breed dogs who's hearts and patellas have been vet checked and deemed excellent.

CAL VAL PUPPIES ARE ...
*Sold with a Health Warrantee
*Out of Champion and Grand Champion bloodlines
*Out of only PLL CLEAR parents
*Up to date on vaccinations and dewormed
*Litter box trained starting at 3 weeks old
*Raised in our living room with lots of love
*Lifetime return policy if you are ever unable to care for your puppy/dog.

I (Gail) worked as a member of the Board of Directors for ARTA (American Rat Terrier Assoc) for several years. I chaired several projects and committees.  I personally designed the ARTA logo, which is still being used and I put together the ARTA Color Guide. We worked side by side with Cindy Cooke, United Kennel Club Vice President. This was an invaluable time in my personal growth and learning about all things, RAT TERRIER.

Ask questions, request additional photos and/or visit our home. We like for you to see how we raise our dogs. We have a good working relationship with our local SPCA and Animal Control Dept as we help rehome Rat Terriers whenever we can. All of our dogs are registered with the Mariposa County.

We frequently refer to other breeders who also health test and use only PLL CLEAR parents.  We are not in competition with anyone. Nor, do we argue with those who may feel differently than we do. We won't participate in slander.

Photographing puppies and keeping their websites up to date is a passion of mine. If you'd like extra photos of any puppy JUST ASK!  I use it as an excuse NOT to do housework! You may share any of our albums with others. But do not take individual photos from my pages with out my permission. Also, we ask that you not cross post our photos or albums without our permission.

HAPPY RATTING!

SINCE THE EARLY 1900'S MY FAMILY HAS BEEN LOVING AND RAISING RAT TERRIERS. HERE YOU CAN SEE THE
PHOTOS OF MY GRANDPARENTS, MY MOTHER, MY UNCLE AND THE RAT TERRIERS THEY RAISED WHO WERE SO
MUCH A PART OF THE FAMILY.  THEY CALLED THEM "TOY FOX TERRIERS" BUT YOU CAN SEE THEY ARE
NOT THE SMALL TFT OF TODAY.  THEY WERE LATER CALLED RAT TERRIERS BY PRESEIDENT TEDDY
ROOSEVELT AND THAT BECAME THEIR OFFICIAL NAME SHORTLY THEREAFTER.

THEY ARE REMARKABLY SMART, LOYAL, FUN AND VERSATILE DOGS WHO WILL WAG THEIR WAY INTO YOUR HEART
AND BE YOUR BEST FRIEND FOR LIFE.

WE SHOW AND CHAMPION AND GRAND CHAMPION OUR DOGS TO VALIDATE THEIR QUALITY BUT MOST OF
OUR PUPS GO TO FAMILIES WHO JUST WANT A WONDERFUL PET, WHICH IS FINE WITH US.

IF YOU ARE GOING TO BUY A PUREBRED REGISTERED DOG, WHY NOT BUY QUALITY?

If you have any questions about our current Rat Terriers or just want to talk dogs... email me at GRINAVERE@AOL.COM

2)  CHAMPION BRUCE ALL MIGHTY @ CAL VAL (RETIRED)

We are fortunate to have several close breeder friends who share their lovely titled males
with us for breeding.  None of us are in competition with each other.  We try to help each other in our breeding choices....always with an eye to creating better and better Rat Terriers.
Other Hobby Breeders will understand the wisdom in this. More then one intact male sets up
competitive stress for the dogs and that stresses out us humans! humans.

REGIS sires litters for us as well as outside selected females.

ALL of our MALES and FEMALES are PLL CLEAR!

TBL MTN CAL VAL LULU LAROO - R NEW GIRL!
5. TBL MTN CAL VAL LULU LAROO - R NEW GIRL!  (7/12/17)
LULU  a.k.a. TBL MTN CAL VAL LULU LAROO
was born on 7/25/17 to:
Sire: CH CAL VAL RELIABLE ALIBI @ TBL MTN  "ELI"
(Catch Me Monterey Sequoia X GRCH Cal Val ZsaZsa Von Baitdriven)
Dam:  MTN TOP JUS ZO YA 'NO  "ZOEY"
(GRCH Cal Val Regis Smiley by Guy X Catch Me Tango)

6 mo old LULU will be entering the AKC show ring the first week in August. We are very excited about
showing a MINI as they are not common in the AKC show ring. LULU has been a sheer delight to have
around. She is super playful and up for anything competitive. She is built to the hilt and very athletic.
Very confident and playful. LULU is ALL that and more.

LULU has the distinction of being the ONLY dog we've ever had that LOVES the hose.  She "chases"
the water stream and it delights her to get soaking wet.  NONE of our other Rat Terriers like the water and
especially the hose. We now have a small swimming pool on our front deck for her entertainment and to
cool off. The other dogs are starting to take more interest in it but still HATE the hose.

THANK YOU DAWN JANTZEN of TABLE MOUNTAIN RAT TERRIERS for this adorable fun loving GIRL!
We LOVE LOVE LOVE this girl and her spirit of adventure.  Wish us LUCK in the show ring!

WELCOME TO OUR HOME
8. WELCOME TO OUR HOME  (JUNE 25, 2008)

We moved to the mountains in APRIL of 2008. We are surrounded by tall pine trees and clean fresh air. We are at 3,000 ft elevation so we do get some snow each winter...just enough to be decorative but not a hardship.

WE LOVE IT HERE... who wouldn't?

Each year we add improvements to the home and yard is a work in progress. I'll try to get updtaed photos with each new change

You can contact me at GRINAVERE@AOL.COM

UKC GR CH CHAOS
10. UKC GR CH CHAOS    (August 21, 2003)
Image hosted by Photobucket.com
CHOAS came to us a as a fat puppy from Patty Cromer of Maxwells Rats in Alabama many years ago and our life has never been the same.
This sweet suhthun boy won my heart and knocked our sox off in the show ring. CHAOS was the first dog that I truly considered my OWN and my HEART DOG. He taught me how to show dogs as he was a natural and I was a Newbie.
Not only did I acquire my canine heart throb, I also acquired a great friend in Patty.
CHAOS's parents are:
MAXWELL'S FULL OF TROUBLE
and MAXWELL'S MISSY
He is a UKC Grand Champion and one of his daughter's was the 2002 #1 TOP TEN Rat Terrier in the Nation in show points.
CHAOS has several Champion and Grand Champion offspring and grandoffspring now. Many have been in the Top Ten. He was the featured dog on the 2003 front cover of the Brown Trout Calendars for Rat Terriers and in the year 2004 he is the featured dog for the month of MAY.

SAD UPDATE:  CHAOS was injured in September of 2005 and barely survived.  He was left paralized. I spent the next 3 1/2 months trying to rehabilitate him enough that he could stand and walk again. That required expressing his bladder several times a day and sewing outfits for him to protect his legs from sores as he scooted across the house. We made some progress but he was never able to walk or stand. He was relatively happy but he really missed being outside and KING of the yard.

It was an emotional time for me and for my family.  The Grandchildren were especially affected by this as he was dearly loved by all of them.  On December 10, 2005, after much prayer and many family discussions, I let CHAOS go to his Heavenly Father. For months I could not talk about it or I would dissolve. I've never had the loss of a dog effect me so much. I missed my buddy and my friend. I appreciated all the kind words of condolences from those who loved my boy and who love me. It helped.
Most Sincerely, Gail

12. GIRDY ROTTEN SCOUNDREL GETS HER NAME  (August 21, 2003)
ALBUM UPDATED 1/28/09
Every once in a while you keep a puppy who has the appearance of a total sweetheart. Then, they turn into a rip-snortin' package of trouble, wrapped up in a cute package.

Such is the case with Miss CAL VAL GIRDY ROTTEN SCOUNDREL and this is how she got her name.

GIRDY IS AN ADULT NOW AND A DELIGHTFUL PET TO A WONDERFUL FAMILY. I'VE NEVER HAD A PUPPY QUITE LIKE HER.

PICABO is in her NEW HOME
13. PICABO is in her NEW HOME
THE STORY OF PICABO (UPDATE 2/9/13)

PICABO is now in her new home.  Jim and Mary have 11, 12, and 13 yr old Rat Terrier females that they purchased from us years ago.  PICABO is the new "BABY" of the Family. They are thrilled and so are we!

PICABO was a scrawny, tiny, ugly  2 3/4 oz puppy when she was born. I was sure she wouldn't survive. Yes, she WAS ugly. I tube fed her a few times that day and kept her warm but didn't expect her to live through the night. She had other plans.  I tube fed her a few more times the next day and saw her latch on a few times. She was always very squirmy when I picked her up. After a few days we realized her mother was setting her aside and nursing her alone.  Rat Terriers are SO SMART!

PICABO has no future in the show ring!! You might say she was an embarrassment out of two Grand Champion parents. Her littermates were 3 times her size. It was a great stroke of luck that her GRANDDAM GRCH HALO had lost a singleton puppy at birth and was eager to mother a puppy. Picabo was 4 weeks old when her littermates started to wean.  She needed to keep nursing. HALO was more than happy to adopt her and continue to nurse her until she was 3 1/2 months old! HALO adored her adopted daughter and mothered her with such affection. HALO licked and caressed her and played with her nonstop. PICABO thrived on all the attention.

PICABO was examined by our vet at age 3 months old and declared HEALTHY despite her size. Good heart, good lungs, and nice, tight patellas. Her overbite and narrow muzzle does not effect her eating.  We know she looks more like a Chihuahua than a Rat Terrier but she is full blooded RAT TERRIER. She has the cutest personality. Full of Fun and Vinegar and yet still very affectionate.

She also has the cutest SMIRK!!
