Acrylic and Grid Stacked Cages by Kathy
2. Acrylic and Grid Stacked Cages by Kathy  (March 6, 2005)
This is a smaller cage setup that is intended for use with single pigs such as those who do not get along with others or those with special needs. The photos include photos of two sets of bonded pairs who will move into another larger setup when it is completed.

The cage is made from metal shelving, wheels, and poles from The Container Store, grid panels, and custom-made acrylic bases. I went to Tap Plastics and had bases made to fit on 48"L x 18"D shelves but will swap out those shelves for 48"L x 24"D shelves and add a 1" x 6" wood shelf to extend the depth of each cage. The acrylic bases are 45"L x 16.5"D x 6"H (and 4.5"H in the front). The thickness is 3/16". The acrylic base that is on the rabbit condo is the one used in the Lupine Garden theme cage and it measures 45"L x 21"D x 6.5"H and it is 1/4" thick. If I were to have new bases made, I'd use the size above since it was made to fit on a 24" x 48" utility table. The cage was going to be a theme cage but I may just leave it as it is so that more light into the cages.

Attaching Cage Decorations by Kathy
3. Attaching Cage Decorations by Kathy  (July 20, 2002)
This album contains photos that show how to safely attach decorative items to your guinea pig's cage. The album includes close-up photos and how-to instructions. The important thing to keep in mind is that if you can't make an item safe for a guinea pig, don't use it not matter how much it would visually enhance the cage. Borders & Backgrounds by Kathy
4. Borders & Backgrounds by Kathy  (July 14, 2002)
These photos show some of the basic steps in creating base-coverings and backgrounds for a theme cage. Examples show how a different colored grid can change the look of a border and how to attach and protect a wall border or background. Clear acrylic is used to protect the base-coverings and borders from being chewed by inquisitive guinea pigs. Information on making "Cubes and Coroplast" cages may be found at: www.cavycages.com

Cat-Proof Theme Cages by Kathy
5. Cat-Proof Theme Cages by Kathy  (June 30, 2002)
Many times guinea pigs need to be enclosed in a habitat that protects them from household pets or rambunctious children. The photos in this album show examples of secure, covered theme cages. Please see the various theme-cage albums for detailed photos of the cages pictured in this album. Please note, all photos featuring a cat are staged photos for the album. The cats could hardly wait to get off the cage! Information on making "Cubes and Coroplast" cages may be found at: www.cavycages.com

Creating Windows & Mirrors by Kathy
6. Creating Windows & Mirrors by Kathy  (July 17, 2002)
These photos show various windows that have been created in theme cages. Windows provide the resident guinea pigs with an opportunity to interact with and view the world around them. Also, if a cage has an upper level, a window along the front of the cage and the sides provides light to the lower-level. The album also shows how to make a mirror or a picture by placing an item behind the cutout window area. Information on making a "Cubes and Coroplast" cage may be found at: www.cavycages.com

Quick 'n Easy Theme Cage by Kathy
10. Quick 'n Easy Theme Cage by Kathy  (July 19, 2002)
This album shows how one can make a theme cage with a minimum of effort and decorations. The cage used in this album is a modified 2 x 3 grid Cubes and Coroplast cage. Windows have been added to both sides and the front (see the "Creating Windows" album for more information on adding windows to a cage.) The only materials needed for this cage are corrugated plastic, 20 cable ties, 4 one-inch-binder clips, 4 pieces of clear-packing tape, 10 grid-cube panels, 4 pieces of acrylic, and your imagination. Please see Shelley's "Rainbow Apartments" and LilyGrace's "Bachelor's Pad" for additional "Quick 'n Easy" theme cages. A theme cage does not need to be a major production or extravagant...just the basics may be all that is needed or desired. Plus, as you will see with this type of cage, themes can be easily changed with the seasons or ones whim! Information on making a "Cubes and Coroplast" cage may be found at: www.cavycages.com

You've probably heard about the Blue Bird of Happiness, but do you know about the Blue Birds of Paradise?  These beautiful blue birds, along with silk flowers and ivy, a picket fence, and bird houses, adorn the top of this wonderful habitat.  There are many photos that show you how to create a similar 2 x 6 grid Paradise for your own guinea pigs.  The photos include ones that show how to divide a cage when new guinea pigs are being introduced to one another.  Also, included are photos of The Nest, an upper-level area for getting a closer view of the Blue Birds of Paradise.

Curvy Cavy Caviary: Albinocavies
19. Curvy Cavy Caviary: Albinocavies   (July 29, 2004)
I got SO sick and tired of the red coroplast with the black and white "checkered" grids. Not only that, but the coroplast had been patched and reconfigured so many times that it was literally falling apart. So I decided we needed a change. I bought silver Coroplast and opted to use mostly white grids with just a few black thrown in for "excitement". I got 80% of the cage built assembled in my living room last night, but I needed to tear down the old cage before I could move the new cage in. The "kids" got to sleep in the new cage in the living room before it was completed with quilts for bedding. NOTE: This album shows how one can make a theme cage with a minimum of effort and decorations: just colorful items were used to create this cage. A theme cage does not need to be a major production or extravagant ... just the basics may be all that is needed or desired. Ghosts and goblins beware! Tex and Chip have once again made their famous Witch's Brew consisting of greens, greens, and more greens. Their haunted house is the 2 x 3 grid cage featured in the "Quick 'n Easy" theme cage album. All of the decorations are attached so that they are safe from being chewed on by the resident ghosts and goblins. Come join the Halloween fun: haunted house, ghosts, witches, pumpkins, monsters, and more! Please note, although this album depicts Halloween, the same concept may be used for any holiday. 26. Lupine Garden by Kathy  (June 23, 2002)
This theme cage features a custom-made acrylic base, a floral wall border, and a colorful scenic background that was created with stickers. This background, complete with hot air balloons, is the only one that ever catches the attention of the resident guinea pigs. The Lupine Garden uses organizational shelving to make it a very sturdy and secure cat-proof cage. This cage is mainly used for foster guinea pigs and ones who are in quarantine, thus the number of different guinea pigs shown in the various photos.

The Metallicage by TexCavy
28. The Metallicage by TexCavy  (June 4, 2004)
Ridgemont and Panache's cage is made of the chrome cube grids and black coroplast ... the colors inspired the theme based on my son's favorite rock group (which I introduced him to BTW). I built this cage without a single connector. Instead, I used my own idea of overlapping grids which I used to make the sides of another of my cages to fit the available area. With a two square overlap on the ends and a one square overlap on the front and back, it makes the cage size almost exactly 2-1/2 by 3-1/2 grids. With an upper deck going all the way across the length of it, this is a very nice sized cage.

Pigtopia Gardens by Alexandra
32. Pigtopia Gardens by Alexandra  (November 19, 2004)
The base is a door that I had around the house. I put a plastic shower curtain over the door to protect from pee and I used closet shelves as the walls. I put two store-bought cages that I had on top of the door, stacked on top of each other. The dimensions of the store-bought cages are 16 by 28 inches and the dimensions of the outer part of the bottom-cage base is 24 by 60 inches. That leaves them a lot of room to run around. Now they are both popcorning like crazy and running around the cage since they now have room. I have a rug on the ramp ... it has very good grip. Beabie goes up and down every five minutes. And Bacon finally learned how too use it. She is a little more shy. They eat upstairs and sleep in the downstairs cage because I put their pigloos in there and it is very quiet. All of the decorations and things I painted myself. I pretty much did all of this by hand and from inspiration. They really like the new cage.

Pigopolis by Coolcavy
33. Pigopolis by Coolcavy  (December 9, 2004)
We built a huge cage ... It took more time collecing bits and pieces then building it. The idea on how came in a dream (as all my good ideas), because ordering C&C was hiddiously expensive, mostly in shipping it to our country.

The cage is 2m by 0.85 m.  I have a new pellet dispenser, which is easy to fill and clean.  We gave them some pine hidey’s, but they had to go, as they only used them for peeing. Hubby had the greatest idea to give them two plant houses in pine and plexiglas; they absolutely adore it! The top is ventilated because it stands a bit from the sides and they can pass through and through. They haven’t stopped playing in it, they love I and it was very cheap.

They do their business [urinate and defecate] on the towels. I pull off the top sheet (one big one covers it all), shake it out, and of it goes straight in the washer. I gather the towels, which are damp, but not wet, and they join the sheet in the washer. Boiling wash, tumbledryer and that's it. I can't use anything else as it's hiddiously expensive here!!! Even more to throw bedding away. Our country sells garbage bags with the city name on them. Those are the only ones being pickup up by the garbage men. Pricy!

Seeing the piggies popcorn of excitement was the best birthday gift ever from my hubby.   They still are popcorning ... can't believe how happy they are. I'm so pleased!

Rainbow Apartments by Shelley
35. Rainbow Apartments by Shelley  (July 24, 2002)
Using the colors of the rainbow as a starting point for this high-rise apartment, Shelley has created colorful, yet simple theme habitats for her guinea pigs. Corrugated plastic is used for the base of each cage and hardware cloth is used for the sides and back; grid-cube panels are used to enclose the front of the cages (organizational shelving may also be used). She used a 2' x 4' utility-shelf unit to hold the four cages. The bright colors used for the corrugated plastic bases and the items in the cages are all that is needed to create this colorful and fun Rainbow Apartment.
